January DIY: Calm Down Glitter Bottles

This year, I thought I’d share a simple DIY activity I’ve done with my students and my own children, related to SEL.  I don’t do things like this all the time, I prefer to keep my day to day counseling simple.  However, for weeks before vacation or earned rewards, these are so fun!

I’ve been making glitter bottles this way for 5 years now, and it’s definitely my favorite.  I have some of the bottles I made 4 years ago, so I can definitely attest to their sturdiness.

Here is what you will need:

  • A water bottle (I have used small water bottles, but the VOSS ones are my favorite.  The one in the photo above is from Michael’s craft store.)
  • Hot water (be careful with little ones.  I just use hot tap water)
  • 4-6 oz. glitter glue (I’ve used all different brands, and more or less, I find this is the perfect amount)
  • 1 oz. glycerin (I get this at Michael’s or online.  You can use more or less, this is what causes the glitter to fall slowly)
  • Glitter (one or two colors is best)
  • Food coloring (just a few drops will do)
  • Optional:  Hot glue gun or glue for the top (I highly recommend this!!)

Here are some tips I’ve discovered over the years:

  • The hot water is really important for helping the glitter glue melt and not just stay in large globs.
  • I try to measure out and lay everything out ahead of time for my students.
  • We make these typically after learning about mindfulness, and then immediately use them to practice.
  • When I send them home with my students, I send them with this poem (you can grab it on TPT or Etsy) so that parents and students remember how to use it.

Please share if you make them!
