Superflex Saves the Holidays

I don’t know about you guys, but I go through stages where I love and use the Superflex Curriculum all the time, and then just don’t have the right fit of students for it for a bit.

This year, I have a few groups that are really into Superflex, so we are going with it!  I wanted to share with you guys a fun activity for any holiday that we’ve been doing.  As you know, I’m all about the simple, effective counseling tools.  I think this is one of them!

For this activity, your students have to have the Social Thinking background, and be familiar with a few Unthinkable characters.  You can do this in person or virtual.  I’ve done it both, and in combination.  Works great!

Here’s what to do:

  1.  Pick 3-10 Unthinkable characters that your students are familiar with.  The number will depend on your student’s age and familiarity with the Unthinkables.
  2. Brainstorm ahead of time how the Unthinkables would cause chaos on the holiday.  Here are some examples: “It’s New Years and I spilled my popcorn.  This is already the worst year OF MY LIFE!” (NYE for Glassman)…”Your snowman is terrible!  Who built that, a baby?” (Snow day, Mean Jean).
  3. Write these down on post its, or I use Jamboard for virtual groups.
  4. Set the scene…”Oh no!!  Valentine’s Day has been taken over by the Unthinkables!  You must use your Superflex powers to help defeat the thoughts that the Unthinkables are making others feel!”
  5. Have students go through each and figure out which Unthinkable is affecting the person.
  6. Then, have the students use their Superflex strategies to change them into a flexible thought. “No big deal, I can get more popcorn”…”That’s a great snowman!”

Try it out, and let me know what you think!
