I first saw Writing Useful, Accessible, and Legally Defensible Psychoeducational Reports mentioned in one of the School Psychologist Facebook groups I am in.  Over the summer, I did a lot of overhaul and organization, and one of my “to do” items was working on what I call my “monster template” for my reports.  I decided to order this book, and wanted to share my review with you all!

book review

Writing Useful, Accessible, and Legally Defensible Psychoeducational Reports is an “easy” Summer read for School Psychologists.  I felt like the authors had certainly been there-in our School Psychologist shoes, and knew the ins and outs of writing psychoeducational reports.  The authors provide a number of explicit, easy to implement tips for our report writing.  I found myself post-it noting several pages to remind me of things I already knew (for example, checking for the use of appropriate tenses), to new tidbits I could use (readability statistics when considering who I am writing for).

What I liked about it:

  • Concrete, easy to implement suggestions and strategies
  • Easy to read
  • Authors know the ins and outs of report writing
  • It served as a good reminder of who I am writing reports for

What I didn’t love:

  • Some of the suggestions and tips might not fit with your district standards or requirements
  • There were a bunch of examples provided, but all followed a format that I couldn’t use in any of the districts I’ve worked in.  I would have loved to see some more variety.

Overall, I would definitely recommend Writing Useful, Accessible, and Legally Defensible Psychoeducational Reports School Psychologists, Special Education teachers writing reports, etc. . I reference mine over and over!
