Book Review: 15-Minute Counseling Techniques that Work

Today I’m sharing with you a book I was sent from the National Center for Youth Issues, an organization that does great work with providing resources to help us, help kids, manage big and little emotions.

This book, 15-Minute Counseling Techniques that Work:  What You Didn’t Learn in Grad School, by Allison Edwards was just what I needed right now; a quick read with some easy, take away tools.  Let’s face it, most of us as educators right now are working harder than we ever have, so I loved that I could read this over in one day, and have a few things in my pocket to do with my students the next day.

The book offers 15 tools to use in counseling.  The explanations are quick and easy to understand, and they pinpoint some counseling topics that are great to use with them.  I found that it was a mixture of some I was familiar with, some I had learned about, and some new ones I was excited to try.

So far, I’ve done a few trials of (virtual!) square breathing with my students, and I actually implemented a toddler version of the “I did it!” tool in my own house, to end our days on a positive note.

I’m giving away 2 copies on my Instagram page if you’d like to check it out, or grab your own copy here.
